Summary of Don’t Believe Everything You Think By Joseph Nguyen
Chapter 1: The Journey to Finding The Root Cause For Suffering
The author explains that there are two types of sorrow, Physical and emotional. There are physical sorrows that are impossible to avoid completely. Because no one knows what will happen. But it is also true that emotional suffering can be avoided. By avoiding this sorrow, you can make your life such that you will not have any sorrow around you. So let us know about this. When you are stuck in a bad situation, two types of arrows come towards you. The first is physical, and the second is emotional.
Gautam Buddha once said that the first arrow, i.e., the arrow of physical discomfort, you cannot control. While the second depends on how you react or behave towards the first one. You can either feel sad thinking about the sadness caused by that situation, or you can move beyond it and find happiness. It all depends on what you choose to do in that situation. Meaning, how you behave towards the world around you determines how you will feel about the surrounding environment. If you are suffering from your current situation. Then remember that it did not come suddenly. But it started when you kept thinking about that problem for a long time. That is, in real life, for as long as that problem lasted, you kept thinking about it again and again. Many good and bad things happen to every person every day.
Some people feel a little sad in those bad situations, while many people become very sad and depressed. After every incident, the way he feels and how you will handle it. Gautam Buddha once said, that when there is a way to avoid it, why is there so much suffering? When the author Joseph heard it for the first time, he did not understand its meaning. He could not get the answer to this question immediately. For this, he relived many moments of his past life, and then was he able to understand how to avoid emotional pain.
To understand this, he also participated in many seminars, meditated, and did yoga. Despite doing all this, he still felt incomplete. Joseph was about to give up the search for truth. When he met his spiritual master, who told him that the mind is the cause of all suffering. People who are not mentally strong are sadder than mentally strong people. The coach said, your mind can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. How you handle any situation depends entirely on your habits. And thinking After this, you will automatically understand what needs to be done to attain happiness and how you can be completely free from emotional pain.
Chapter 2: The Root Cause of All Suffering
Thoughts have the power to shape our lives. Due to this, our mood and way of feeling tarts changing completely. We are what we are because of our thoughts. The lives of people who think negatively are also like that. They are always angry, afraid, and worried. They consider the people around them as their enemies. Because of thinking with fear and doubt, they often make wrong decisions. On the other hand, people who think positively attract happiness and prosperity into their lives. They live a happy life and everything seems to be going their way. Despite the ups and downs in life, they are usually thankful for what they have.
Even in the same situation, two people can be happy and unhappy, depending on their way of thinking. Just like, one can be happy thinking that I have quite a nice house. The other person may be sad, thinking that I have a small house. In this way, happiness and unhappiness depend on your thinking. We all have the same problems at our level in life.
It depends on our perspective, whether we feel happy or sad thinking about it. Once upon a time, there was a young monk who had trouble focusing while meditating. Every time he tried to meditate, something would happen that would distract him. Sometimes an animal would pass by, and sometimes the sound of a person speaking would interrupt his meditation. So he started meditating by sitting on the bank of a quiet waterfall. But the sound of birds made it difficult to focus even there. One day he saw a boat near the waterfall. He boarded it and started going in the middle of the river, thinking that there would be no obstacle there. After reaching the middle of the river, he started meditating.
There was no problem for the first five days, the monks were meditating with full focus. But on the third day, while meditating, his boat suddenly collided with another boat. He opened his eyes in anger to shout at the other person, but there was no one in the boat. That boat had come there due to the flow of wind. Then the monk understood, and his anger subsided, thinking that the reason for his lack of attention was not the surrounding things. But his reaction towards them. He was thinking more about the surrounding things that were creating obstacles than about himself. In this way, you make things easy and difficult for yourself. Remember that nothing but our thoughts are the cause of suffering. So start thinking positively.
Chapter 3: Why Do We Even Think?
You already know that about 6000 thoughts are generated in our minds every day. As a result of responding to the world around us. You must have also realized that most of these thoughts are negative. This happens not because we want to, but because it helps us survive. Due to the occurrence of many natural disasters since ancient times, to handle them. Humans have developed the habit of looking at the negative side of things first, which in a way is beneficial for our survival. Scientists call this habit negative bias.
In today’s modern world. We do not need negative bias as much, we do not need negative bias as much. And humans do not have to struggle to survive. But the old habit of seeing the negative aspects of every situation first often prevents us from walking on the path of happiness. So now is the time to leave old thoughts and give rest to your mind. Be thankful that your brain has helped us survive for many years, now turn it towards being happy. This is where your self-awareness comes in, i.e., awareness of your thoughts and feelings. By becoming more aware of these, you can easily divert them towards thinking about situations that bring you happiness and satisfaction. By doing this, you will feel complete and will be able to see the world from a new perspective.
Chapter 4: Thoughts Vs Thinking
Okay, tell me one thing, where do your ideas come from? Many people will say that because of our thinking, but this doesn’t need to be true every time. Thought is a universal creation. We have had this since childhood. For this, we do not need any energy or force. Many thoughts come to people’s minds every day. The truth is that we have no control over how thoughts will come to our minds. But we have complete control over whether they will remain or not. For this, you have to understand the meaning of thinking. In simple words, thinking means thinking about your thoughts. That means talking about the idea that has come into your mind. Whether you want to see it coming true in real life or not. If you are still confused about the meaning of thought and thinking.
Then let us understand it with the help of an example. Now I am going to ask you a question. Tell the first answer that comes to your mind. How much money do you want to earn every year? Now tell me what came first to your mind. Let’s move ahead.
Multiply your dream income amount by ten and describe how you feel now. Do you think this can be achieved? Just now, when I asked you a question, an amount immediately came to your mind. This is how thoughts work. They come suddenly at any time without you trying. The work of thinking begins when you start thinking about every thought that comes to you.
Most people have no problem with the thought, the problem starts when they start thinking about it. Let us understand this through this example. When you multiply your dream income by ten, you may have noticed a slight change in your emotions. You might have felt happy. In this situation, you may feel happy and someone else may feel worried. Thus, your emotions are shaped by how you think about the situation. So stop blaming your thoughts for your emotions. But start improving your way of thinking and think about the good effects that thought can have.
Chapter 5: If We Can Only Feel What We are Thinking, Do not We Need to Think Positively to Feel That Way
In the previous chapter, we learned that thought and thinking have a direct connection with each other. We feel what we think. In this chapter, we’ll delve a little deeper into how thinking affects our emotions and what we can do to stop it. Negative emotions arise when you think about an idea too much. Thinking about being afraid to go out at night can make you feel stressed and anxious at times. Many people think that by thinking positive instead of negative, everything will be fine. But this is also not a completely correct method. Rather, the right approach is to think nothing.
Let us understand this with an experiment. Think about the most beautiful moment of your life, are you able to remember what you were thinking at that time, most people will not be able to do this. Because the truth is that at that time you were not thinking anything but were living that moment. Some people might have had thoughts related to that in their minds and that was because they felt themselves living happily in that moment.
Thoughts came because first you started living that moment in your mind, not because first thoughts came and then you felt happy. According to an experiment, when we stop thinking, we start feeling good. To be happy, free yourself from overthinking, and accept things as they are. Stop thinking and start living the moments. The less you think about things, the happier you will be.
Chapter 6: If Thinking Is The Root Cause Of Our Suffering. How We Stop Thinking?
Once a warrior came to a monk and asked, how do heaven and hell look like? The monk replied, Why should I tell you, you look very dirty. And I don’t have time to tell you anything right now. Come back later and get out of here now. Hearing this, the warrior got angry and started taking out his sword to kill the monk, then the monk said that this is hell. Hearing this, the warrior understood the monk’s teachings cleared his mind, and sat nearby to take knowledge from him. The sage said this is heaven.
In this story, you see how our emotions work. Similarly, when we see any threat to our life or self-respect around us, we immediately go into warrior mode. Our brain works like this. Many people think that by stopping thinking we can prevent such a situation from happening. but it can not. Because stopping thoughts from coming is like stopping your breathing, which is impossible.
The mind is made to think only. You don’t have to stop thoughts from coming but change your response to them. You have to reduce the time you spend thinking about the idea after it comes to you. Now the question might be coming to your mind how will we know that we are thinking too much about something? So the simple answer is when you start feeling stressed or uncomfortable about something. Then understand that you are thinking too much about it. In such a situation, take a deep breath, get away from that thought, and, let your mind relax.
Chapter 7: How Can We Possibly Thrive In The World Without Thinking?
Think of a moment when you were completely engaged in your work. You were so engrossed in his work that you had no idea about his surroundings. Were any other thoughts coming to your mind apart from work at that time? Your answer will be no. The authors call this Flow of State. In this situation, the person does one task. So attentively that he starts enjoying it and does not pay attention to the things around him, his other thoughts or feelings. The state of flow is like non-thinking. In which you do not think much, your subconscious mind is thinking and you just focus on your work.
Many people also call this being in the zone. athletes are good examples of this. When an athlete is performing on the track, his entire focus is only on giving his best performance. Apart from this, he does not think about anything else like what is right or what is wrong. He just tries to give his best according to the methods he has learned in training. Think about that. Similarly, if you stop worrying too much about things, you will be able to achieve more. The world where you focus on doing instead of thinking is the world where you become the best. So remove all the worries and fears and just start doing your work with focus.
Chapter 8: Nothing Is Either Good or Bad
Keep in mind that everything in the world is right in its place. Every person has his own opinion. What seems right to one person may mean something else to others. You just have to understand that not everyone will feel the same way as you. Because it depends on the environment, culture, and attitudes around us whether something is good or bad for us.
Let us understand this with an example: Think of a piano. There are different types of tunes in it. Now tell me one thing, is every tune good or every tune bad? You will answer that it will be decided according to the tune whether it is melodious or dissonant. Suppose the piano player plays a song and you know all the notes of that song. In such a situation, if he plays it wrong then you can tell that this tune is not right for the song. When that song starts playing perfectly, you will be happy because it did not make any mistakes. Like a piano, no decision in life is wrong it is considered wrong. When it deviates from our thinking or expectations.
Therefore, next time before considering any situation as wrong. Try to understand whether it is really bad or whether it is fine in its place. But you are forming bad thoughts by thinking too much about it. In this way, seeing from an objective point of view will make you feel better. Once you realize that the situation is not so bad. The negative feelings will immediately disappear and you will start feeling good.
Chapter 9: What Happens When You Begin Living in Non-Thinking
You will get such benefits by being in a non-thinking state and start feeling better. You will be able to do your work with focus. By working with focus you will be able to perform well.
